The trauma-informed treatment approach is one where helping professionals assist clients in understanding how people react and adapt to experiences of trauma. Clients are able to understand where behavior is coming from by explaining the effects of trauma on the brain and how it impacts emotion regulation.
Trauma-informed treatment emphasizes self-care, deep breathing, healthy eating, exercise and other daily wellness practices to fight the impact of trauma and the ongoing arousal that it can induce. Creating a sense of safety is paramount and the therapist may teaching “grounding” or “anchoring” and other “psychological first aid” practices during sessions.
